American Hartford Gold: fees, minimums, and fine print

American Hartford Gold does not publish its minimums or its fee schedule. That leaves one place to find the real numbers: the sales call. The three tools below are built for that call — model the spread, price a live quote, and work out whether an IRA or a cash purchase fits before you dial. For the wider view, see how the major dealers compare.

Disclosure. Gold Unpacked may be compensated by dealers we write about. Nothing here is tax, legal, or investment advice, and every figure you enter below is your own assumption rather than a projection. Verify all terms in writing with the dealer and the custodian.

The short version

A well-established, high-volume dealer built around a personal phone relationship. The trade-off is opacity: with no published pricing, the burden of getting the numbers on paper sits entirely with you.

Likely a good fit

  • Investors who want a dedicated phone contact rather than a self-serve checkout
  • Buyers holding both an IRA position and directly delivered metal
  • People comfortable asking for an itemised written quote before committing
  • Investors who want a stated buyback commitment with no added liquidation fee

Probably not for you

  • Anyone who wants published pricing and an online order flow
  • Smaller balances, where flat annual fees eat a larger share each year
  • Buyers who move quickly under limited-time promotional pressure
  • Investors looking for a fully digital, advisor-free setup

Tool one

True cost and free-silver model

A dealer can advertise “up to $15,000 in free silver” and still be the more expensive option, because the promotion is paid for out of a spread nobody quotes you. Set the spread against the bonus and see which way the arithmetic falls.

The one question that unlocks all of this: ask for the itemised price per ounce on every product, gold and silver, alongside the spot price at the moment of the quote. Every number above becomes a fact instead of an assumption.

Tool two

Nothing here is stored or sent anywhere — the boxes are a scratchpad for the length of the call.

Tool three

IRA or cash purchase?

American Hartford Gold sells both a tax-sheltered IRA position and metal delivered to your door. They suit different situations, and one of the combinations below is not permitted at all. Three questions.

Step 1 of 3

Where is the money coming from?

The written review

What the company is, and what it does not tell you

Background

American Hartford Gold was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Los Angeles. Its leadership page names Sanford Mann as founder and chief executive alongside a full executive team, and the company describes itself as family-owned, operating from three locations with more than 200 employees. It has appeared on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies more than once — a third-party signal about revenue growth, which is not the same as a signal about pricing or customer outcomes.

On reputation, the company advertises an A+ Better Business Bureau rating along with five-star ratings on Trustpilot and Google. Review counts and ratings move constantly, and a BBB rating measures how a company handles complaints rather than whether its prices are fair. Check the live profiles rather than trusting a static number quoted in a review — including this one.

The structural point. American Hartford Gold is a dealer. It is not your custodian and it is not your depository. A separate IRS-approved trustee administers the account and a separate vault holds the metal. Three companies, three fee schedules, and only one of them is on the phone with you.

What it sells

Gold and silver IRAs

Self-directed IRAs funded by rollover or transfer, holding IRS-eligible bullion at an insured depository.

Direct cash purchases

Metal bought outside a retirement account and shipped to you. No custodian fee, and no tax shelter either.

A buyback commitment

A stated three-step buyback with no added liquidation fee, settled at the prevailing bid on the day.

Fees, minimums, and the part most reviews invent

This is where a lot of competing articles start making numbers up. The honest position is narrower: American Hartford Gold publishes neither a minimum investment nor a complete fee schedule on its public website. Third-party sites commonly cite an IRA minimum somewhere between $10,000 and $25,000, a lower threshold for cash purchases, and annual custodian and storage charges in the low hundreds. Those figures are secondhand. Treat them as a range to test on the call, not as facts.

Whatever the numbers turn out to be, they will arrive in four parts:

01

Dealer spread

The gap between spot and what you pay. Almost never itemised as a fee, and usually the single largest cost in the transaction.

02

Custodian setup and admin

Billed by the third-party trustee that administers the account, not by the dealer. Typically a one-time setup charge plus a flat annual fee.

03

Depository storage

Charged for insured vaulting. Segregated storage — your specific bars, kept apart — costs more than commingled.

04

Liquidation spread

The gap between spot and the buyback price when you sell. A zero-fee buyback commitment does not mean a zero-cost one.

The free silver, read closely

The company runs recurring bonus-metal promotions, advertising up to $15,000 in free silver on qualifying purchases. The silver is real. This is not a fake offer, and calling it one would be wrong. Four things about it are worth holding in mind anyway:

  • It scales with the purchase. The headline $15,000 figure attaches to very large six-figure orders, not to a typical account.
  • It is funded by the spread. Bonus metal comes out of the markup margin on your primary purchase. It is a discount presented as a gift.
  • Delivery changes the tax picture. Bonus silver is frequently shipped to your home rather than placed in the IRA, which makes it a separate, unsheltered holding.
  • The deadline is the point. A countdown discourages the one thing that would reveal the real price: two same-day quotes from two dealers on the same product.

Run the numbers through the model above. On a wide spread, a $15,000 bonus can still leave you further from spot than a plainer quote with no promotion attached.

Sector-wide, published pricing is the exception rather than the rule, which makes the written quote the only reliable comparison tool. The longer version of this comparison lives in Augusta vs Birch Gold Group.

If you go ahead

01

Decide the allocation first

Settle how much of the portfolio belongs in metal before you speak to anyone selling it. A fee-only adviser has no stake in the answer.

02

Get the quote in writing

Spot price, unit price, quantity, percentage over spot, and every recurring fee — on one page, emailed, before you authorise anything.

03

Compare the same product, same day

Metal prices move. A quote from Tuesday tells you nothing about a quote from Thursday. Price the identical coin at two dealers within the same hour.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is American Hartford Gold legitimate?

Yes. It is an established, high-volume precious metals dealer founded in 2015, with an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and multiple appearances on the Inc. 5000 list. Legitimacy is not the same as competitive pricing, though — a real company can still quote you a wide spread, which is why the written quote matters.

What is the minimum investment for an American Hartford Gold IRA?

The company does not publish a minimum on its public website. Third-party sites commonly cite a figure between $10,000 and $25,000 for IRAs, with a lower threshold for direct cash purchases, but those numbers are not sourced from the company and can change. Ask on the call and get the answer in writing.

Does the free silver promotion actually deliver silver?

Yes, the metal is real. The economics are the part to examine: bonus silver is funded out of the dealer spread on your primary purchase, it scales with order size rather than being a flat $15,000, and it is often shipped to your home rather than placed inside the IRA.

Can I take physical possession of metal held in a gold IRA?

No. Metal inside an IRA has to remain with an IRS-approved trustee at an approved depository. Taking personal possession is treated as a distribution, which means income tax on the amount and potentially an early-withdrawal penalty.

How does the buyback process work?

The company advertises a three-step buyback with no added liquidation fee: you request a quote, the metal is shipped or transferred, and you are paid at the prevailing bid. The absence of a fee does not remove the spread — confirm how the buyback price is set relative to spot on the day you sell.

Who actually holds my account and my metal?

American Hartford Gold is the dealer. A separate IRS-approved custodian administers the IRA and files the reporting, and a separate depository stores the metal. Three companies, three fee schedules. Ask which custodian and which depository before you open anything.

Educational disclaimer. Gold Unpacked is not a registered investment adviser, tax professional, or commodity trading adviser, and this page is general education rather than personal advice. Precious metals carry market risk and can lose value. Every output above is generated from assumptions you entered, not from quoted prices. Confirm fees, minimums, storage terms, and spreads in writing with American Hartford Gold and with your chosen IRS-approved custodian before moving retirement money.
